I’ve been a fan of art films most of my life. But “Untitled, The Movie,” deviates from most movies of this genre. Like many independent films, Untitled is less loosely structured than the typical mainstream and there isn’t a neat conclusion. But it deviates further; its principle actors present messages that go beyond their attractive and eccentric artistic personas to become integral elements of the film – that is itself a conceptual artwork; it presents ideas that often go beyond the material elements (the characters and settings).

Untitled takes place in art galleries and surrounding environs of the upscale Chelsea neighborhood of New York. The film’s theme addresses contemporary art, including postmodern, assemblage and conceptual art, as well as avant garde iron rain chicago, and the world that these art forms inhabit. And it does so without defining art or drawing conclusions about art.

While the movie has beautiful people, glamorous settings, edgy contemporary art, and iron rain chicago, this is not a fashionable, escapist film; its message is often uncomfortable, confronting and challenging conventional perceptions of what art is.

• $750 for each child in primary school, and

• $1,500 for each child in secondary school

These amounts equate to a maximum tax offset of $375 and $750 respectively. It is a good idea to be aware of this scheme, as parents can now claim for allowable expenses related to their children’s education. Some common allowable expenses include: laptops, desktop computers, education software, school textbooks, trade tools etc. So be sure to keep those receipts, as every dollar spent (up to the limits above) could be worth up to a 50c tax refund for your family.

Eligibility The ETR is available to families receiving the Family Tax Benefit Part A (FTB Part A). The FTB Part A is a separate existing tax benefit which is given by the Family Assistance Office as fortnightly payments to families that meet the Income Test. We won’t go into all the rules regarding qualifying for the FTB Part A, but basically families that have a total family income of less than a certain threshold will receive this tax benefit. In the 08-09 year, this limit was $98,514 (for families with under 18 dependants) or $99,962 for families with some dependants over 18. Add $3,796 to the respective limit for each additional child. So basically if your family income was less than this limit, you would be eligible for the FTB Part A, and hence the ETR (whether you currently receive the FTB is irrelevant, your family just needs to be eligible for it).

Additionally, for the purposes of the ETR, any income in the form of youth allowance, disability support or ABSTUDY (there are a few others) do not count to this limit. So if your family income falls under the threshold for the FTB Part A but for those payments in respect of your child, you’re still eligible for the ETR.

Allowable expenses

Generally, all expenses that (in the words of the federal government) “support a child during school and improve quality of education” are allowable. For example:

• Laptops & home computers and associated costs (including repair and running costs of computer equipment and lease costs), home Internet connection and printers and paper

• Education software

• School Textbooks and material (including prescribed textbooks, associated learning materials, study guides and stationery)

• Prescribed trade tools

The list above is not exhaustive, but give you an idea of what are allowable expenses.

Notice that all school textbooks and materials are allowable. For example, you or your child may have purchased HSC textbooks, or prescribed texts for HSC English – claim those! Your family internet connection is also claimable. Just remember to keep your receipts. If you buy claimable goods second hand from private sellers, request a receipt (a simple note noting the goods / service, the price and date will suffice).

However, tuition costs (such as payments to Dux College or other HSC tuition colleges) and school fees are not allowable expenses. Nor are non-education related software such as computer games, or hardware used for such purposes, obviously.

How to claim

The ETR is claimed when parents complete their annual tax return. For those using the e-Tax software, there will be a section for the ETR. Just remember to keep those receipts!

*Dimension adds definition. Meaning, hair that is highlighted, low lighted, or both will show the details of your updo more that all one color hair will. The Hair Shack recommends having your hair colored, if you choose to do so, one to two weeks before your prom day.

*Hair accessories are usually an inexpensive way to add a hint of flair to your updo, especially if you have one solid color of hair.

*When deciding how you want to wear your hair, take into consideration the style of your dress. Having an open back dress will put emphasis on your back, you won’t want to cover that up by leaving your hair down, a side pony updo or all up would be your best choice. A halter top dress looks better with your hair all up. A high back dress would look good with half up, half down updo. Bring a picture of your dress to your hair stylist. Your stylist can help you decide what updo would look best with your dress.

*Bringing in pictures of updos that you like won’t hurt and can be very helpful, but go in with the understanding that your stylist is a Beautician not a Magician. Meaning, you can’t expect the results of a updo that requires 18 inches of hair when you have 8 inches of hair.

*If you are not sure what you DO want, be sure to know what you DON’T want. After you have discussed what you like and dislike in an updo, trust your stylist. They know how your hair will look its best. Just remember, your stylist can not read your mind, if something is not looking rite speak up and let them know. It is much easier to change something on your updo before it is complete and needs to be taken down and redone.

*The day of your updo your hair needs to be COMPLETELY DRY. Many salons will charge you for every minuet they spend drying your hair before they put it up. It is true that dirty hair holds better but oily hair will not. If your hair is not oily, coming in with hair that has not been washed for 24 hours will hold curl better and last longer. If you need to wash your hair before your updo, put a mouse or Agel in it when it is wet and stay away from any silicone products. Give your hair at least 12 hours to dry. Hair is like nail polish in the aspects of drying, it may look and feel dry but it isn’t. Any moisture left in the hair will prevent your hair from holding a curl and as a result may not last through the end of the night.

*Wear a button up shirt to your hair appointment. The last thing you need to worry about is how you are going to get your shirt off without ruining your updo.

*Lastly, be considerate of your stylist and the other clients. On prom day everyone is on a tight schedule. Arrive at the salon 10 minuets before your appointment to keep things moving smoothly. If you end up not needing your hair done, cancel your appointment as soon as possible. Most salons have a waiting list and can get another girl in your spot. Just not showing up for your appointment is not only rude, it prevents some other girl from having her hair done.
